Every Animal Here Deserves a Real Home

West Milford's community-run shelter matching well-cared-for animals with loving families across Passaic County.

About Us

On Lycosky Road in the wooded hills of West Milford, this shelter runs on something harder to manufacture than funding: genuine care. Reviewers consistently note how clean the facility is and how knowledgeable the staff are, and those aren't small things. A clean, calm environment is the difference between an animal that thrives and one that shuts down.

The West Milford Animal Shelter Society is volunteer-powered, community-rooted, and built on the belief that every animal deserves patient, attentive placement. Animals like Peeps, a cat who waited a full year before finding her forever home, get the time they need rather than being rushed through a system. Staff and volunteers stay genuinely invested long after adoption day.

With a 4.4-star rating across more than 100 community reviews, the shelter has earned real trust from real neighbors. If you're considering adoption, this is the kind of place where you spend an hour with an animal before deciding, where your questions get honest answers, and where the process feels personal from start to finish.

What We Offer

The shelter offers animal adoption for dogs, cats, and other small animals, with an application process designed to make good matches rather than fast ones. Staff take time to walk prospective adopters through each animal's personality, history, and needs so you leave confident, not guessing.

Beyond adoption, the shelter welcomes community volunteers who want hands-on involvement, from daily animal care to administrative support. Surrender services are handled with compassion for both the animal and the owner. The shelter also maintains an active online listing at westmilfordanimalshelter.org so you can browse available animals before you visit.

For those who can't adopt but still want to help, donation support and supply drives are ongoing. Every contribution, whether time, food, or funding, goes directly toward keeping animals healthy, housed, and on their way to a home.

"Its a wonderfully ran operation. The staff is fantasic. Many volunteers with big hearts. This is Peeps(aka Chickie). She had been at their facility for a year and needed a home. She had been with us for 3 years now and such a sweetheart. So adopt don't buy. Lots of lovely, cute, old and young babies that need their first or second chance that are looking for their furever home."

"I went in looking for a specific dog I found on there website. I went in put the application in and spent about an hour with him because they were going to close. I made it very clear that I wanted to move forward with the adoption. Apparently saying "I want to move forward with the adoption" does not translate. I was there first person to come see him and put in an application. Only to find out 5 days later the Saturday supervisor Jen did not put my application in. She put it in the just looking pile. Worst, I left there telling my mom that woman Jen rubbed me the wrong way. She wouldn't stop asking about my living situation. Owning my own home seemed to make her want to interrogate me and I guess decide herself not to put my application in. There are so many animals that need a good safe home and this place just tossed my application into the completely wrong pile for no reason. I am so absolutely disgusted with this animal shelter. I do understand that they are volunteers, but what Jen did to me was completely wrong and unprofessional. She probably should not beva supervisor at an animal shelter where homeless animals need good and loving homes. Rebuttal: It was not about being the first person who put in an application. It's about my application never being submitted by Jen. It was just tossed in the "just looking" pile after I asked her to submit it, that I was extremely interested in adoption. Your response does not address the actual issue."

"Found a stray this past week and brought it down to the shelter to see if they could help find its owner. They were super caring for the kitty and helpful in explaining everything about the process to me. Within the hour they had a post on their Facebook page. I'm super confident that little kitty is in good hands."
